Sound and Waves
There are two types of waves:
S-Waves (sheer) and P-Waves (pressure)
Sounds are actually P-Waves.
Sounds travel faster through things the denser they are.
They do need a median to travel through or else there can't be sounds.
The SOFAR channel is a place in the ocean in the middle horizontally where sound travels the slowest but they can travel the farthest.
Marine organisms can use sounds in the ocean by echo location. They can sends a sound wave out and objects or organisms can reflect or send out another wave back.

People use a process called sonar in which sound waves are produced and when they bounce back information about the geography and inhabitants of the ocean is received.
