As Earth's temperature continues to go up due to global warming, it has caused more storms to develop and the numbers of coral reefs are in decline. However for some reason, certain corals such as the gorgonian corals are slowly triving in the ocean. They are soft, flexible, they can as a species can grow up like a underwater forest. Allowing fish and underwater species to live and thrive lving under them. New research has shown that now gorgonian corals are now starting to take over certain parts of oceans compared to other corals. Experiments and studies will go on to understand what's happening. Understanding this is important because corals are very diverse and one of the worlds most diverse ecosystems. As one of the researchers Howard Lasker said, can it mean with the other corals continuely dropping in numbers, will they start to transform or have similarities to the gorgonian corals because thats what they are trying to find out. They are also trying to find out what the future could be in terms of coral reefs.
The reason I chose this article is because of the importance of coral reefs. When I read articles about coral reefs, it kind of made me realize that they are much more important for other groups of living things then what they are just like. A lot of the main coral reefs are declining in population, there has to be some coral reef the will survive, as coral reefs are important for fish for them to live in, and the fact that they can protect shorelines by absorbing most of the wave energy.
For now, there are coral reefs just like the gorgonian coral that are starting to take over. Research and more studies are continuing about these unique reefs, and how they can be an importance in the future. There also has to be ways to preserve and protect them. As they vital to the oceans ecosystem and life all around actually. Understanding and protecting them can lead to a better future for coral reefs all around.
