Lobster Shell Disease Expanding North: One of Several Diseases of Marine
Organisms Causing Worry
Lobster shell disease was first found during the 1980s. Signs of the disease included black marks on the shell and in worst cases the shell completely rotting away. Now more recently research has found that 1/3 of the lobster population has it, with 70% of females that had eggs has the disease. Researcher Kathy Castro said that this worries her because this is the reproduction population. This disease is caused by bacteria that invade the shell from the outside. They aim at the pores at the outside layer of the shell. The can do several things, more commonly they eat the shell away, causing the membranes and the shell itself to get stuck on the lobster. Lobsters need to molt, or to release it shell, in order to grow. Unable to release it means that it can die. This disease can also affect the Marine fisheries. The black spots on the shells make the lobsters look so unappetizing for fishers. With more lobsters having this disease, it can be harder for fisheries to find normal lobsters. The disease itself does not affect anyone who consumes the lobster that has the disease, but the appealing factor, or the looks of one who has the disease, affects people who want lobster that now its starting to worry the fisheries for lobsters.
Why I chose this article is because I guess I kind of like lobsters myself... though this article made that lobsters are a bit more important economically for businesses like seafood ones. Environmentally they are important for in water they can mix up nutrients for filtering species to feed on. Those species can keep the water clean. Now commonly overfishering and the diseases has cause the population in decline.
Right now scientists say that there are options to stop the disease. Theres one to put diseased ones in fresh water, or to put them in antibiotic water to get rid of the disease from the lobster. Then theres to just get rid of the diseased lobsters completely. Though they do need funds and resources if they want to even attempt to do these things.
